Looking out for each other, safely

Being a good neighbour

  • Know the people around you. Share contact numbers with trusted neighbours, especially those who live alone.
  • Check on the vulnerable. Older people, new parents and anyone unwell benefit from a regular knock on the door.
  • Work with your local police. Many police stations run community policing and neighbourhood programmes. Ask how your area can take part.

Staying within the law

  • Report, don't confront. Community volunteers have no police powers. If you see a crime, call 112 and let the police handle it.
  • Never take the law into your own hands. Detaining, punishing or harming anyone yourself is a crime.
  • Don't spread rumours. Unverified messages about strangers or crimes have led to real harm. Check facts with the police before sharing anything.
In an emergency, always call 112 first.
